“As you think, so shall you become.” This phrase is often attributed to Bruce Lee but actually it appears to be an ancient Sanskrit proverb. Other way to say this is “Our thoughts create our reality.” In modern times, with modern medicine and modern testing and DNA verification, it is quite normal to hear people say.. “well my dad had a heart attack and his dad had a heart attack, so I will probably have a heart attack.” Or… “cancer runs in the family.” Yet, 150 years ago, doesn’t it seem that people were overall healthier? Yes, maybe we are living longer now but the QUALITY of life did seem better overall in the past. Indeed, our world has become more polluted and toxic and, of course, those elements play a large role in our health. But what about our thoughts? Could it be that all the new awareness of health and medicine and statistics creates anxiety and stress and worry in itself? And with computers and tablets and mobile phones, it is very hard to escape this information overload. And is it possible that this constant focusing of “health dangers” might CREATE the very thing that we fear? “Sugar will lead to diabetes,” “Smoking causes lung cancer,” “Diet sodas can cause kidney problems.” “Using lotion with peanut oil when you are pregnant will create allergies in the newborn.” Of course, there is evidence about these things and I am not saying to ignore common-sense warnings. What I am saying is that our culture has been programmed to be in a constant state of FEAR about our health, to the point that we are constantly “walking on eggshells.” THIS could be the greatest detriment to our health of all!!!
What if we could reverse the negative programming in relation to our health that we all have picked up over the years as a society? What if we could re-program our minds to ONLY accept well-being rather than sickness.
This concept is not new. There have been many, many versions over the years of this concept but due to the constant negativity surrounding our health, it is now needed more than ever. There are so many examples of what is now called “psycho-neuro immunology.” One of the pioneers of this attitude was Normal Cousins. Norman Cousins, who wrote “Anatomy of an Illness” chronicled his own experience using “laugh therapy” to literally change his biochemistry to deal with a sudden collagen disease in 1964. He had been given the grim statistic that he had a one in 500 chance of recovery — and he recovered! I feel honored that I had a chance to have a private meeting with this great man in 1985 in his office at UCLA.
